Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheese (like sharp cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 2 tablespoons Melted Butter
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 Large Egg

Equipment

  • 9x5-inch loaf pan
  • Large bowl
  • Smaller bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Wire rack

Method

Instructions
  1. Prep Your Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the Cheese: Stir in about 3/4 cup of the shredded cheese, reserving the rest for the topping.
  4. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate smaller bowl, whisk together the milk, the large egg, and the melted butter until well combined.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir with a spatula until just moistened. Do not overmix; the batter should be lumpy.
  6. Pan and Top: Scrape the batter into your prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of cheese over the top.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.
  8. Cool Down: Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before carefully removing it to a wire rack to cool further. For best results, allow it to cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Do not over-mix the batter; a few lumps are fine and result in a more tender bread. For best results, grate your own cheese as pre-shredded varieties can contain starches that affect melting. Let the bread cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing to allow the crumb to set. To prevent cheese from sinking, toss it with a tablespoon of the flour mixture before adding to the batter. Variations include adding diced jalapeños, fresh herbs, garlic, or crumbled bacon.
