Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon Toasted Sesame Oil
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger, minced or grated
  • 2 stalks Green Onions, chopped (plus more for garnish)
  • 2 cups Cooked Rice, for serving
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Optional additions: Sliced bell peppers, shredded carrots, broccoli, spinach, fried egg, toasted sesame seeds, kimchi

Equipment

  • Large skillet or wok
  • Rice cooker (optional)

Method

Instructions
  1. Prepare the Rice: If you haven't already, get your rice cooking first. This ensures it will be perfectly fluffy and ready to serve the moment your flavorful beef is done.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef: Place a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it's nicely browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. If there's a lot of excess grease, carefully drain most of it off.
  3. Add Aromatics: Add the minced garlic and ginger to the skillet with the beef. Sauté for about 30-60 seconds, stirring constantly until they become fragrant. Be careful not to let them burn.
  4. Create the Sauce: Pour the soy sauce and sesame oil over the beef mixture. Stir everything together to ensure the beef is evenly coated. Let it simmer for a couple of minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to slightly thicken.
  5. Finish and Serve: Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the chopped green onions. Season with salt and pepper if needed. To assemble, spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture over a bed of warm rice. Garnish with extra green onions, sesame seeds, and any other optional toppings.

Notes

For best results, use fresh garlic and ginger. Don't overcrowd the pan when browning the beef. Letting the sauce simmer for 2-3 minutes allows it to reduce and create a glaze. For variations, add a tablespoon of brown sugar for sweetness or gochujang for heat. Ground turkey, chicken, or pork are great substitutes for beef. The sauce can be prepared up to three days in advance for a quicker meal.
